George Bumann’s (pronounced Bū-min) art represents a rare blend of art and science.  Bumann is a naturalist in the classical tradition and his artwork represents that vision. His aim is to transcend anatomy and composition to evoke an emotional connection with viewers of his work. That work celebrates the endless intricacies and diversity of nature—each element in itself being worth the journey of discovery. There is no substitute for field experience and the knowledge of your subject it brings. The elements of composition, behavior, form, and function cannot be imagined in any way approaching their novelty in nature.

Raised in the world of sculpture in his mother’s upstate New York studio, George developed an eye for form and composition at a very early age. He has melded this fortunate upbringing with his formal education in wildlife ecology that includes, but is not limited to, the disciplines of ornithology, mammalogy, ichthyology (the study of fish), aquatic and terrestrial entomology (the study of insects), botany, comparative vertebrate anatomy, soil science, animal behavior, forest pathology, herpetology (study of reptiles and amphibians), geology, dendrology (study of trees), field biology, and museum taxidermy. He has earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in this field.

A gifted teacher, Bumann has taught natural history and art programs for youth, adult, and university audiences since 1990. He currently teaches programs for the Yellowstone Association Institute and other organizations.  Through his teaching and personal outings, George is fortunate enough to spend more than 1500 hours each year in the wilds of Yellowstone National Park.

George lives with his wife Jenny and black Labradors, Jasper and Casey, in Gardiner, MT, at Yellowstone Park’s northern entrance. His work can be found in collections throughout the United States and England. He is a member of the Society of Animal Artists, and his sculptures reside in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, WY and in the private collection of the Deputy Superintendent of Yellowstone Natn'l Park (retired).
